Brown noise and ADHD: what the research actually says
Millions of people say brown noise quiets their mind. The largest review of the evidence found zero studies of brown noise — and something more interesting instead.
Search for brown noise and ADHD and you will find a wall of confident headlines. The honest picture is stranger and more useful than any of them. When researchers gathered every controlled study of coloured noise and attention, they found not a single published study of brown noise. What they did find was a small, real, and oddly specific effect — one that appears in people with ADHD and reverses in people without it.

What the research actually found
The most rigorous evidence we have comes from a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, led by Joel Nigg and colleagues at Oregon Health & Science University.1 It was preregistered before the researchers began, which matters: it means they committed to their methods in advance rather than fishing for a result.
Pooling 13 studies covering 335 children and college-age young adults with ADHD or elevated attention symptoms, they found that white or pink noise produced a small but statistically significant benefit on laboratory attention tasks — a standardised effect size of 0.249, with a confidence interval that stayed comfortably above zero.1
Several quality signals point the same way. Variation between studies was minimal, the result held up under sensitivity testing, and the authors found no sign of publication bias — the common problem where flattering results get published and dull ones quietly don't.1 For a field this noisy, that is a reassuringly clean finding.
The scale matters too. An effect size around 0.25 is small. This is a nudge, not a transformation. It is the kind of effect that shows up reliably across a group of people without necessarily being obvious to any one of them on a given afternoon.
The brown noise gap
Here is the part almost nobody reports. The researchers explicitly looked for studies of brown noise. They found none.1 Every controlled trial in the analysis used white or pink noise.
So how did brown noise become the sound of ADHD? Not through journals. It spread person to person on social media, where people described a very consistent experience: the restless mental chatter dropping into the background. That is a large body of anecdote, and consistent anecdote is worth taking seriously — but it is not the same thing as evidence.
There is a reasonable argument for why brown noise might behave similarly. The noise colours are mathematically related, differing in how energy is distributed across frequencies. Brown noise simply pushes more power into the low end, which is why it sounds like a deep rumble instead of a hiss — the distinction we unpack in the colors of noise. If the mechanism is broadband sound rather than any specific colour, brown noise ought to qualify.
But "ought to" is a hypothesis. Until someone runs the study, the popularity of brown noise rests on comfort and word of mouth, not data.
Likely because it is pleasanter to sit inside. White noise carries a lot of high-frequency energy, which many people find harsh over hours. Brown noise strips out that hiss and leaves a low roar that is far easier to tolerate for a long work session. Comfort drives adoption — and the noise you can actually stand for three hours is the one that helps you.
Why it might work
Two related ideas are usually offered, and both should be treated as working theory rather than settled fact.
The first is the moderate brain arousal model, which proposes that ADHD involves an under-aroused attentional state, and that a steady external input can lift arousal into a more productive range. The second is stochastic resonance, a genuine phenomenon in physics and biology in which adding a modest amount of random noise to a system can make a weak signal easier to detect. Applied here, the suggestion is that background noise may help a signal-detection process that is otherwise running slightly under threshold.
These are plausible and actively researched. They are not proven mechanisms for why your playlist helps you finish a report — and any article that states them as fact is overselling.
There is also a far less exotic explanation that likely does real work: masking. A steady sound covers the door slam, the conversation, the notification — the sudden events that break concentration. That is the same principle behind music for focus, and it requires no neuroscience at all.3
Why it may not help everyone
The most striking result in the review is the one that gets left out. In the comparison groups without ADHD, white and pink noise had a negative effect on task performance — an effect size of −0.212, in the opposite direction from the ADHD groups.1
Read that carefully, because it reframes the whole topic. This is not a story about a sound that makes everybody sharper. It is a story about a sound that appears to help brains that are under-stimulated and to mildly hinder brains that are not.
Practically, that means two honest things. If you have ADHD, background noise is a genuinely reasonable thing to trial. If you don't, and you have been layering brown noise over your workday because the internet told you to, it may be very slightly working against you — and silence, or something quieter, may serve you better.
How to try it safely
Keep the volume low. This is the one real risk, and the researchers flagged it directly: safe and appropriate volume levels have not yet been established.1 Background sound should sit under your task, not over it. If you are raising the volume to keep it working, stop and take a break instead.
Test it like an experiment, not a belief. Try it on a few work sessions and compare honestly against silence. You are the only sample size that applies to you, and the effect in the research was small enough that self-deception is easy.
Pick the colour you can tolerate. There is no evidence that brown beats white or pink — but there is a strong argument that the one you don't mind hearing for two hours is the one you will actually use. Do not treat it as treatment. ADHD is a medical condition with evidence-based care. Background noise is a comfort and focus aid that may help at the margins. It should sit alongside proper support, never in place of it.
The honest limits
Even the good evidence comes with real caveats, and they are worth stating plainly:
These were laboratory tasks. The studies measured performance on attention tests, not grades, work output, or how a week actually goes. The leap from a lab task to your Tuesday is not guaranteed.
The population was young. Participants were children and college-age young adults. Applying the finding to adults in general goes beyond what was tested.
The effect was small, and short-term. A 0.249 effect size is a nudge. And these were brief sessions — nothing here tells us what happens if you run brown noise eight hours a day for a year.
And there is still no brown noise data. Everything above describes white and pink noise. The single most popular sound in this conversation remains, as of now, unstudied.
A preregistered randomised trial comparing brown noise directly against white noise and silence, in adults as well as youth, measuring real-world output over weeks rather than lab tasks over minutes. Until that exists, anyone telling you brown noise is proven for ADHD is telling you something the literature does not currently support. We will update this page when it does.
